RESUMÉ TIPS

If a potential employer asks you to send a letter or a resume as an attachment, make sure you send it as a PDF. Doing so preserves the formatting. This is a must!

Before sending it, print out your resume, (another must!) you will see errors that you did not see when you read it on the computer screen.

Then read it OUT LOUD to yourself and then read it backward, you will see errors that you did not see when you were reading it left to right.

Business man review his resume on his desk, laptop computer, calculator and cup of coffee,Seleted focus.

VIRTUAL INTERVIEW TIPS

Many small companies are using zoom to interview candidates. If you get a virtual interview here are some tips:

  • Elevate your computer to eye level, put a stack of books under your laptop
  • Look into the camera. -very important if you are using a webcam.
  • You could ask for their phone number or give them yours just in case the internet goes down.
  • A blank wall should be behind you. Do not use wacky zoom background.
  • Lighting should be behind you shines on your face, lighting behind you will create a glare for the interviewer.
  • Ensure internet connection is stable and update software.
  • Test computers webcam, audio and microphone 24 hours in advance.
  • You could ask for their phone number or give them yours just in case the internet goes down.
  • If you must use a phone rather than a computer put it in a stable holder so your image is not moving around. Make sure you test it. The odds are it will fall down halfway thru the interview.
  • Find a quiet place. Turn your ringer off.
  • Get someone to babysit your dog. Put a note on your front door and let your family or roommates know you need silence.
  • Know where the mute button is, in case your doorbell rings or the neighbor decided today is a good day to tear down that shed.
  • Have a pen and paper handy.
  • Dress up as if you were meeting them face to face. And please put some pants on, just in case your phone falls down or you have to jump up to get something to write with.
